Success story: Ammonia Open rack heater replacement in coastal France

Cryonorm recently completed the replacement of an Ammonia Open Rack Heater (ORH) at an industrial facility on the French coast. Built to withstand the challenges of a marine environment, the new system delivers high capacity, proven reliability, and long-term durability, meeting the client’s exact requirements for their critical cryogenic process.

Project scope

The assignment covered the design, fabrication, and delivery of a fully shop-built, seawater-heated ORH. Key specifications included:

  • Capacity: 26 tons per hour (2 × 13 t/h modular units)
  • Operating pressure: Up to 40 bar
  • Design standards: EN13445, Eurocode 9, ISO 14692
  • Materials: Marine-grade aluminium and FRP components to ensure corrosion resistance

The modular two-block configuration allows flexible operation, enabling either full or partial load depending on seawater availability and process demand.

Technical execution

To ensure long-term performance and reduce installation time on-site, several design measures were implemented:

  • Maximized shop fabrication to minimize field work
  • Corrosion-resistant aluminium frame tailored for coastal conditions
  • Protective coating system with over 20,000 operating hours in LNG service
  • Zinc anodes for additional cathodic protection
  • Optimized seawater distribution for consistent heat transfer
  • Delivery under positive nitrogen pressure (-40°C dew point) to prevent internal icing

All equipment was manufactured in the Netherlands, tested under Cryonorm’s rigorous quality program, and shipped to France under DAP Incoterms. Third-party inspection was carried out by Lloyd’s, with full compliance to PED 2014/68/EU.

Results & impact

This successful ORH replacement highlights Cryonorm’s expertise in delivering technically advanced and highly reliable solutions for demanding environments. The system provides:

  • Reliable ammonia vaporization in coastal conditions
  • Extended service life thanks to durable materials and coatings
  • Sustainable performance through efficient seawater heating

At Cryonorm, we combine engineering know-how, European manufacturing, and proven cryogenic technology to ensure consistent world-class performance, project after project.
